Companies taking part in Hong Kong’s packaging-reduction charter have reduced their packaging-material use by about 13,000 tonnes, according to the undersecretary for environment and ecology. That is equivalent to the weight of about 900 double-decker buses, the official said at the programme’s first awards ceremony on 30 September 2026.
The charter had 148 local and multinational signatories by the ceremony, covering about 3,000 service and retail outlets across Hong Kong. Seventy-five participating companies received awards for work carried out during 2025–26.
The Environmental Protection Department launched the charter in March 2025 to encourage businesses to review and reduce their packaging use. Companies are assessed on five areas: packaging reduction, recyclability, reuse or recycling, sustainable packaging, and efforts to promote packaging reduction.
