Police said an 89-year-old woman reported that a caller had impersonated her son and claimed he had been arrested in an assault case. The caller asked for HK$600,000 as compensation for the case’s victim.

She handed over the money in two payments of HK$300,000 at the Upper Ngau Tau Kok housing estate on October 12. After checking with her son, she suspected she had been deceived and reported the matter to police.

Police arrested a 21-year-old man in Tuen Mun on the morning of October 15 on suspicion of obtaining property by deception. He was being detained for investigation.
