A 63-year-old man surnamed Cheung was airlifted to hospital after feeling unwell near the Po Pin Chau viewpoint in Sai Kung on September 5, while hiking with his wife and a friend. Reports said he was suspected of suffering heatstroke, although no hospital diagnosis was provided.
The incident occurred on the first day that the section between High Island Reservoir East Dam and Po Pin Chau introduced a free advance-booking system.
The group set out from East Dam at about 11am. The man became unwell between about 2pm and 3pm, but reports differed on whether this happened before reaching the viewpoint or after he arrived there. His companions called for help, and police received the report at about 3pm.
Rescuers found the man conscious. A Government Flying Service helicopter took him to the Wan Chai helipad, where an ambulance transferred him to Ruttonjee Hospital for treatment.
