A 67-year-old man surnamed Sin died after he was found unconscious on a motorised sampan in waters near Tseung Kwan O during a Red Rainstorm Warning on the morning of August 27, 2026. Reports described heavy rain and rough seas at the time.

People on a passing vessel reportedly noticed the man and alerted police at around 9am. Water police reached the sampan, rescued him and took him to Tseung Kwan O Hospital for emergency treatment.

He was pronounced dead after resuscitation efforts at the hospital. One report said he died at about 11am, although the precise time was not consistently reported.

The incident was reported in waters near the Tseung Kwan O Cross Bay Bridge and, in other accounts, off the Tseung Lam Highway. The supplied reports do not establish whether the descriptions refer to exactly the same location.

Police initially suspected that the man may have been struck by lightning. Reports cited burns, including a prominent injury to his chest; another account listed burns to his neck, chest, left back and right arm. The lightning theory had not been confirmed.

Police said the cause of death was pending a post-mortem examination. The sampan was towed to the Marine Police base in Sai Wan Ho for inspection.
