A 78-year-old man surnamed Choi was rescued unconscious from the sea in the Tsing Yi area at about 11.36am on August 30 and taken to Yan Chai Hospital for emergency treatment.
Police and fire services attended after receiving a report of a suspected person in the water. Marine Police were also reported to have been at the scene. The man was taken first to Tsing Yi Fireboat Pier before being transported by ambulance to the hospital.
Reports differed on the precise location. Ming Pao said the man was found in waters about 20 metres offshore from Cheung Ching Road, while Star Headline placed the incident near Tsing Yi Bridge, off a container terminal. Police found his personal belongings on a sea railing near Cheung Ching Road, and both reports said no suicide note was found.
Star Headline reported that the man had recently been emotionally low because of health problems, including a disc protrusion and high blood pressure. The report said he had not disclosed any suicidal thoughts; it did not establish a cause for the incident.
The case has been handed to the Tsing Yi district miscellaneous investigations team. Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident, and the reports did not say whether the man had regained consciousness or establish why he fell into the sea.
