On the 19th day of the trial of three men charged with murdering Abby Choi, her former driver testified about resigning from his job in November 2022.

He said Choi’s former brother-in-law told him the family would be away for two months and asked him to take unpaid leave. The driver offered to keep working and maintaining the car for half his usual pay, but said the offer was refused and he resigned. He confirmed his last day was 15 November.

The driver testified that the seven-seat vehicle’s dashcam did not work and that only Choi’s former brother-in-law had its password. After the dashcam was repaired, he said, the car sometimes lost power and would not start; it worked normally again after a new battery was fitted.

In cross-examination, defence counsel suggested that two or three men had lingered outside a home in February 2022 while Choi hid in the car. The driver agreed that the incident was linked to gambling debt and that he later heard Choi mention HK$600,000 to her former brother-in-law.

The driver also agreed with defence counsel’s suggestions that Choi had stopped carrying large sums of cash and was having cash-flow difficulties. Counsel cited examples including Choi sometimes asking the driver to pay for purchases before reimbursing him.
