About 150 children preparing to enter Primary One took part in an initiation writing ceremony at Sik Sik Yuen’s Wong Tai Sin Temple on August 23, 2026.
Wearing traditional Confucian clothing, the children joined rituals including paying respects at the temple and having cinnabar dots placed on their foreheads. One report described the observance as paying respects to Confucius.
The ceremony was described as a traditional rite symbolising the children’s initiation into literacy and learning.
Sik Sik Yuen vice-chairman and Education Committee chairman Yiu Ka-tung encouraged the children to respect morality and cultivate virtue. He said education involved more than acquiring knowledge, and expressed the hope that they would contribute to society.
Lawmaker Lau Chi-pang said a broader public understanding of the foundations of Chinese culture would be important to developing Hong Kong as a centre for cultural exchange between China and other countries.
The ceremony brought together children about to begin primary education and traditional rituals centred on learning and moral development.
