About 300 boxes of untaxed manufactured tobacco, weighing around 8,000 kilograms and with an estimated market value of about HK$53.4 million, were found in a truck at Shenzhen Bay Control Point.
Customs officers stopped the inbound medium goods truck on October 12 after intelligence analysis. It had reported carrying plastic-wood flooring, but no goods were declared. The tobacco was not listed on the truck’s manifest, and duty had not been paid on it.
The 51-year-old local male driver was arrested. The Customs and Excise Department said the investigation was continuing and officers were tracing where the tobacco came from and where it was headed.
