A 38-year-old accounting clerk has been jailed for six years after admitting that she stole about HK$10.03 million from her employer, Eware Networks Limited. The sentence was imposed on 13 October 2026.

The theft involved 171 company cheques between 21 August 2019 and 30 May 2024. The clerk had worked for the company since 2005, with access to its accounting system and online banking. She prepared cheques for the company’s responsible person to sign, and the amounts were not checked after signing.

A login problem in June 2024 prompted questions, and the theft came to light. HK01 reported that, when questioned under caution, the clerk admitted changing cheque amounts to increase them and said she had lost the proceeds gambling.

The sentencing judge said the offending was planned, continued for about five years and involved abusing the employer’s trust. The judge treated those features as aggravating factors and said the guilty plea was the only mitigating factor.

The court also made a criminal bankruptcy order because the clerk could not repay the company.
