Chief Executive John Lee said the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) plans to establish an office in Hong Kong with financing and operational functions. He said the government would support preparations and help with the office’s establishment and operation.

Lee made the comments after meeting AIIB President Zou Jiayi at Government House on 19 October. Zou and her delegation were in Hong Kong for the two-day APEC finance ministers’ meeting, scheduled to begin the following day.

Lee said the office could create more opportunities for Hong Kong’s financial sector and deepen cooperation between the city and the bank.

He also welcomed further AIIB use of Hong Kong’s bond market to issue bonds and direct international capital towards quality green projects, supporting carbon neutrality and the transition to a green economy.
