After nearly eight months in operation, the basic housing scheme had received registration applications covering more than 75,000 subdivided units, about 70% of Hong Kong’s estimated total. Secretary for Housing Winnie Ho gave the figures.

The Housing Bureau had also received certification applications covering about 250 units and approved certification for 53.

Ho estimated that about 30% of subdivided units have relatively poor living conditions and may need major renovation to meet the scheme’s minimum standards. The remaining 70% would need simpler work.

She expects rental supply from subdivided units not to fall sharply in the short term, saying transition arrangements give owners time to make alterations.
