The Hong Kong Fire Services Department received at least 105 reports of people trapped in lifts within 20 minutes from about 1.10pm on 13 October. The reports came from areas across Kowloon and the New Territories, including Kwun Tong, Tsuen Wan, Sheung Shui and Tsim Sha Tsui.

CLP said a 400,000-volt supply line linking Lai Chi Kok and Tsz Wan Shan recorded a brief voltage dip at about 1.09pm. Electricity supply was not interrupted, the company said, although some customers might have seen lights dim or flicker. Voltage-sensitive equipment could also stop temporarily when protective mechanisms activated.

Reports described lifts in hospitals and shopping malls stopping temporarily, with people trapped. The Fire Services Department linked the voltage dip to lift-entrapment incidents and fire alarms sounding in affected areas, and said it was carrying out rescues and handling related incidents.

CLP said it was following up on the incident.
