The Centre for Food Safety has ordered an affected batch of Unionsum bamboo shoots sold through HKTVmall to be withdrawn and recalled after testing found sulphur dioxide that was not declared on the label. HK01 reported that the product was still listed for sale on HKTVmall when it checked the site.
The affected product is a 250g pack originating in China, with a best-before date of 2 August 2027. Unionsum is the distributor and HKTVmall is the retailer.
The detected sulphur dioxide level complied with legal requirements, but the packaging did not state the additive’s function category and name. The Centre for Food Safety said that, under Hong Kong’s labelling rules, pre-packaged food containing more than 10 parts per million of sulphites must list that information. It also said sulphur dioxide is used as a preservative and that people allergic to it may experience asthma, headache or nausea after eating it.
Consumers should stop eating the affected batch. Businesses holding it should stop using or selling it. Unionsum is carrying out the recall. Consumers can call Unionsum on 6275 2510 during office hours.
