A Citybus driver has been jailed for six months after being convicted of two counts of dangerous driving causing serious bodily injury over a crash involving an airport-bound A22 bus. The collision occurred on May 1, 2025, on the Tsing Sha Highway; one report described the location as a section of the West Kowloon Highway.
The bus struck a crash barrier and water-filled barriers, injuring passengers. The court found that video from inside the vehicle showed Lau Cheuk Hei rubbing his eyes, closing them, lowering or tilting his head and appearing to doze while driving.
Lau told the court that dust or itching had caused him to rub his eyes, that some of his movements were stretching and that he had experienced a sudden darkening of vision. The court rejected those explanations as implausible or unsupported by the evidence and concluded that he had been driving while severely fatigued. His driving fell far below the standard expected of a competent and careful driver, the court found.
Lau was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, with the two terms running concurrently, and was disqualified from driving for three years. He was also ordered to complete a driving improvement course. One report said he must take the course at his own expense during the final three months before the driving ban ends.
The prosecution identified two seriously injured passengers as Wong Ka Fai and Wong Sai Ying. The reports differ on the overall injury toll: one refers to two passengers suffering fractures, while the other reports 18 injuries overall and separately identifies two seriously injured passengers. They do not clarify whether the figures reflect different injury categories. The conviction and sentence were reported on August 28, 2026.
