On 9 October 2026, the Court of Appeal dismissed the Department of Justice’s appeal against the acquittals of three defendants, leaving the trial verdicts in place.
The case arose from an alleged request during a Tuen Mun march on 6 July 2019 for a man to delete photographs and video of July 1 demonstrators.
Lam Cheuk-ting and an online-media reporter had been acquitted of intending to obstruct justice. A social worker was acquitted of dishonest use of a computer and criminal damage.
The reporter was separately convicted of unlawful assembly at trial and sentenced to 13 months’ imprisonment.
The Department of Justice had also challenged costs awarded to Lam and the social worker, but the Court of Appeal’s dismissal left those awards in place.
