The Chinese University of Hong Kong urged new students to use technology and artificial intelligence responsibly at its opening ceremony on 7 September 2026, while a government official called on them to promote patriotism and national security awareness at a flag-raising ceremony held the same morning.
The university president said students should develop the ability to use technology while upholding honesty, independent thinking, respect for others and sound moral judgement. He said these qualities should provide the foundation for their use of technology.
He said artificial intelligence could serve as a reference, but students remained responsible for their own work, creativity and critical thinking. He added that AI might not understand the subtle differences involved in human interaction.
Citing a World Economic Forum report published in June 2026, he said three-quarters of young workers in East Asia would have jobs moderately to highly affected by AI. He used the finding to stress the importance of human strengths including empathy, critical thinking and ethical judgement.
The president also reminded students to pay attention to their mental health and encouraged them to practise social responsibility in their daily lives.
The university’s flag-raising ceremony was conducted by its flag guard, whose members appeared in new purple-and-gold uniforms incorporating elements of the university crest. The Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs attended and presented appointment certificates to members of the guard.
She encouraged students to shoulder the responsibilities of national education, contribute to the country and Hong Kong, and pass on patriotism and national security awareness to the younger generation.
Flag guard member Chiu Chak-yee said she had considered adding phoenix elements to the uniform but decided against them to keep the design simple. Another member, Lui Man-ting, said she had joined flag-raising teams since primary school and hoped to build on that experience while improving her marching and teamwork skills. She also said she intended to apply for an inspector position in the Hong Kong Police Force in future.
