The Customs and Excise Department said it seized about 720,000 suspected illicit cigarettes and about 2,700 suspected counterfeit items in an operation at a Sha Tau Kok shop on October 22.

The goods had an estimated combined market value of about HK$4.6 million. The cigarettes’ estimated dutiable value was about HK$2.4 million.

Officers found the goods in the retail shop on Chung Ying Street and three adjoining rooms. The suspected counterfeit items included perfume and beauty products.

Customs said a 50-year-old local female shop assistant was arrested. The case remains under investigation, and the department did not rule out further arrests.
