Detective Ko Yan-ki said he messaged Abby Choi’s mother during her testimony to ask for the address of a Whampoa Garden property she had mentioned in court.
Ko told the court he had checked the case records but could not find the address. He said the property reference was new information that needed further investigation, so he contacted her to obtain it.
Prosecution counsel put to Ko that he should not contact a witness while she was giving evidence. He disagreed, saying he understood he must not discuss the case with her. He said his contact was limited to asking about the address and practical matters, including reminding her when to arrive at court.
Ko said the witness had voluntarily messaged that she had been angry and had misspoken about the property: many years earlier, she had thought the Whampoa Garden property was jointly owned. He said he had not asked for that explanation and it was not the answer he had expected.
