Driver charged after HK$1m in suspected silver bars found in car

Customs say the bars were concealed in a lower trunk compartment after the car was stopped following a risk assessment.

About 50 kilograms of suspected smuggled silver bars, with an estimated market value of approximately HK$1 million, were found hidden in the lower storage compartment of an outbound private car, Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department said.

Customs officers intercepted the vehicle at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Control Point on 18 September after a risk assessment. The 30-year-old driver was arrested after the bars were discovered.

The driver was charged with one count of attempting to export unmanifested cargo. He is due to appear at a magistrates’ court in West Kowloon on 21 September.
