A faulty underground cable supplying a nearby pedestrian-crossing signal was identified as the source of reported explosive sounds at a construction site beside 88 Kwok Shui Road in Kwai Chung, the Civil Engineering and Development Department said.

Police received multiple reports at 11:21am on 5 October, after intermittent sounds had reportedly been heard since 3 October. Firefighters and rescue personnel found an underground cable emitting smoke and sparks. The area was cordoned off while personnel investigated the fault, and traffic was temporarily diverted.

The department said the site was fenced off while awaiting utility diversion and that no construction work was taking place there. CLP Power Hong Kong Limited suspended power to the faulty cable and completed repairs at about 5:30pm, restoring the crossing signal. The contractor arranged for staff to help pedestrians cross while it was out of service. No one was injured and no evacuation was required.
