A No. 3 alarm fire at I·PARK1, Hong Kong’s waste-management facility on an artificial island off Shek Kwu Chau, led to about 930 workers being evacuated on October 26.
The fire broke out at 12.43pm and was upgraded from a No. 2 alarm to a No. 3 alarm at 1.24pm.
Workers were taken from the island by boat. By about 3.45pm, more than 800 had reached Cheung Chau or Tsuen Wan, while more than 100 were still waiting to board.
One employee who felt unwell was taken by Government Flying Service helicopter to Eastern Hospital for treatment. The Fire Services Department said the fire was surrounded at 3.47pm; HK01 later reported it was controlled at 4.18pm and largely extinguished at 4.45pm.
Police said they suspected construction materials stored inside a building had caught fire first. The cause remained under investigation.
