Five people have been arrested over the alleged theft of several groups of copper wire and 48 copper pump components from Shek Lei Pui Water Treatment Works. Police said the items were worth about HK$350,000 and that reports from the Water Supplies Department came in between July and September.
Police said CCTV footage helped identify a group suspected of taking the equipment from the site and selling it to a recycling shop in Sham Shui Po.
Four men were arrested in Sham Shui Po on 7 October on suspicion of burglary. A 55-year-old recycling-shop operator was arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods. All five were being detained for investigation.
The works stopped operating in 2021. The components were not operational, and the theft did not affect water supply to the area.
