A five-year-old boy with a chronic illness remains in serious condition at Queen Mary Hospital after contracting influenza A and developing severe pneumonia. He is being treated in the hospital’s paediatric intensive care unit.
The boy developed a fever, cough and shortness of breath on August 30 and initially sought medical attention at a private hospital. He was later referred to Queen Mary Hospital because of breathing difficulties.
A respiratory sample tested positive for influenza A, and he was diagnosed with severe pneumonia associated with the infection.
i-CABLE News reported that Hong Kong had recorded 12 serious influenza infections among children since the flu season began in late June. The report did not specify the statistical cut-off date or the detailed definition of a serious case.
