A former treasurer of Shek Yam Alliance Baptist Church was remanded after appearing at West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts on 2 September 2026 on 21 charges involving alleged theft, forgery and dealing with property believed to be the proceeds of crime. His application for bail was refused. The allegations have not been determined by the court.
The defendant, 56-year-old Wong Ka-kee, was reported to have served as the church’s treasurer. He was charged with three counts of theft, 16 counts of forgery and two counts of dealing with property known or believed to represent the proceeds of crime.
The charges cover the period from 1 December 2007 to 31 July 2025, inclusive. The prosecution alleges that Wong stole cash and bank claims belonging to the church. Reported figures for the alleged amounts differ, however, and should be checked against the formal charge sheet or court record rather than treated as settled totals.
The forgery allegations concern church reports and financial statements. Ming Pao reported that the prosecution alleged the documents falsely appeared to have been issued and signed by two accounting firms.
Ming Pao also reported that the church had filed a civil claim in the High Court seeking more than HK$16.25 million from Wong, in addition to interest and legal costs. The filing reportedly said he had been a church council member since 2006 and treasurer until July 2025, with responsibility for income, expenditure, bank accounts and financial reports prepared for audit. The civil claim is separate from the criminal charges.
Wong was not required to enter a plea at the first hearing. He remains in custody, and the case is scheduled for transfer proceedings at Eastern Magistrates’ Courts on 12 October 2026.
