A taxi carrying four passengers continued moving along Ching Cheung Road after its 66-year-old driver became unconscious at about 12.17pm on Monday.
The taxi had already struck a roadside barrier when the passengers tried to wake the driver by striking his arm and face, but he did not respond. As it continued swaying from side to side for more than half a minute, they reached for the steering wheel and handbrake in an attempt to control it.
The taxi hit the barrier again before coming to a halt. The passengers then sought help from passing motorists.
The four passengers, described by HK01 as three women and one man, were uninjured and later transferred to another taxi. Emergency personnel found the driver unconscious and took him by ambulance to Caritas Medical Centre for emergency treatment. Police were investigating the circumstances in which he became unconscious while driving.
