Four members of a family were taken to Prince of Wales Hospital after suspected smoke inhalation during a fire in a 15th-floor flat at Yan Chuen House, Shui Chuen O Estate, in Sha Tin. They were reported to be conscious but unwell.
The fire broke out at about 6am on Sept. 30 and sent heavy smoke through the building. Firefighters used a hose and sent in a smoke-hood team before extinguishing the blaze at about 7:10am.
More than 100 residents evacuated and sheltered downstairs; reports put the total at about 140 to 200. A resident on the 24th floor said his family carried two heavy leopard tortoises downstairs and changed staircases after encountering dense smoke around the 17th floor.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
