Hong Kong Baptist University said on August 16 that relevant web content had been removed as an appointed professional organisation continued a comprehensive review of its information-technology systems and personal-data security after a suspected intrusion linked to the ransomware group “TheGentlemen”.
The suspected incident was reported to involve at least 130 staff accounts and 1,778 user accounts, with data allegedly obtained. HKBU’s statement did not confirm whether the intrusion or alleged data acquisition had occurred, what information may have been affected or whether any personal data had been leaked.
HKBU did not say who removed the web content, what it contained or when it was taken down. It said it had not received any demands in connection with the incident.
The university advised staff and students not to open links or attachments in emails from unknown sources or forward suspicious emails. It also provided a hotline for inquiries.
HKBU said it would announce any personal-data leak identified by the review. The timing of the review’s findings and whether any data was accessed or taken remained unknown.
