HKMU’s first student residence in Hung Hom to open for 2026/27 with about 430 beds

Hong Kong Metropolitan University’s first student residence, located in Hung Hom, is due to open for the 2026/27 academic year with about 430 beds. MU88, at 84-102 Wuhu Street, held its opening ceremony on August 20, 2026, according to reports.

The residence occupies about 6,200 square metres and was converted from the former Chong Yu Hotel under the government’s “Hostels in the City” scheme. It is among the first completed student-hostel conversion projects under the scheme.

More than 80 per cent of the beds have reportedly been rented. i-CABLE News reported that the remaining places would be reserved for exchange students and visiting scholars, with the allocation adjusted according to demand.

Annual rents reportedly range from HK$67,000 to HK$126,000 for single, double and triple rooms. Ming Pao reported listed charges of HK$126,000 for a single room, HK$77,000 for a double room in Block A, HK$72,000 for a double room in Block B and HK$67,000 for a triple room for the autumn and spring terms.

The double rooms include bunk-bed and two-single-bed layouts, while rooms are equipped with desks, wardrobes, refrigerators and bathrooms, Ming Pao reported. The residence also has a gym, billiard tables, self-study and collaboration rooms, communal areas with cooking facilities and other shared spaces. Some of the hotel’s back-of-house facilities and parking space have been retained or converted.

HKMU council chairman Wong Tin-cheung said the residence would support the university’s internationalisation, help attract overseas students to Hong Kong and provide accommodation for visiting scholars.

Reports differ on eligibility. Ming Pao described the residence as serving students, exchange students and visiting scholars, and said it could provide accommodation for teaching and administrative staff. i-CABLE reported that applications were limited to non-local full-time undergraduates, with other places reserved for exchange students and visiting scholars. The university’s final allocation arrangements were not specified in the reports.
