The University of Hong Kong won the ABU Robocon 2026 championship at Queen Elizabeth Stadium on August 23, while the Chinese University of Hong Kong finished runner-up. The result came as Hong Kong hosted the international robotics competition again after a 14-year gap; Ming Pao identified the previous Hong Kong hosting as 2012.
Sixteen university teams from 15 countries and regions took part. The event was jointly organised by Radio Television Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation.
Held under the theme “Kung Fu Quest”, the competition drew on Chinese martial-arts traditions. Reports described teams using two robots in coordinated challenges that included forging traditional Chinese weapons, collecting martial-arts manuals and completing a final strategic task.
Local supporters gathered at the stadium to watch the two Hong Kong teams compete. Ming Pao reported that approximately 2,000 people attended the event.
Financial Secretary Paul Chan said the contest demonstrated the practical challenges involved in engineering. He also said the next frontier for artificial intelligence would involve giving algorithms a physical body through robotics.
The reported programme also included visits by participants to Hong Kong attractions, HKSTP and local technology companies. Nearly 100 young people were reported to have visited Qianhai in Shenzhen to learn about innovation and technology development in the Greater Bay Area.
