A suspended electronic display at Hong Kong International Airport’s Terminal 2 fell several metres on the morning of 5 September but was held by its fall-prevention system, with no injuries reported. The incident happened at about 8.30am on the departures level, and police said they received a report from airport staff at 8.35am. The circular screen, measuring about 1.5 metres by 1.5 metres, reportedly fell from a height of about 15 metres to around 8 metres before remaining suspended.
The Airport Authority cordoned off the area after the incident. Its maintenance team further stabilised the display, while firefighters remained on standby. Police said there was no immediate danger. The authority said the display’s safety system operated immediately when the equipment failed or fell.
The affected display was dismantled and removed around noon for further examination. The other five suspended displays were checked for safety and returned to their positions. The nearby area remained cordoned off and the display system was temporarily taken out of service.
The cause has not been established. Police are investigating whether ageing components were involved and are treating the case as a miscellaneous incident. Reports and online footage described a possible broken cable, but this has not been confirmed as the cause. The Airport Authority said it would conduct a thorough investigation and further strengthen the stability of the safety systems.
