Hong Kong Chief Secretary Chan Kwok-ki represented the Hong Kong government at Nepal’s Consulate-General in Hong Kong on the morning of September 3, signing a condolence book for victims of landslides in the China-Nepal border region.
Chan conveyed deep condolences to the victims’ families and affected residents through Nepal’s representative in Hong Kong. He also wished those injured a speedy recovery and hoped affected communities could rebuild and return to normal life.
Nepal had reported 1,222 deaths by 8pm on Wednesday local time, Ming Pao reported. The figure was the reported toll at that point and was not identified as a final total.
Ming Pao said Nepal’s acting consul-general, Satish Gurung, thanked the Hong Kong government for its assistance and briefed Chan on the latest rescue and relief efforts. Gurung also said tourism infrastructure in other parts of Nepal had not been affected and remained able to receive visitors.
Wei Wenxiu, director of the consular section of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hong Kong, had signed the condolence book at the consulate earlier, according to Ming Pao. The reports did not provide details of the form or value of Hong Kong’s assistance, or establish whether the reported death toll was final.
