Hong Kong’s Customs and Excise Department said it detected three suspected smuggling cases involving seagoing vessels during October, seizing goods with an estimated value of about HK$23.6 million.

The cases involved three containers bound for Malaysia and two bound for Australia. The Malaysia-bound containers were declared to contain vacuum-cleaner parts, but Customs said officers found more than 11,000 suspected smuggled items, including curling irons, hair dryers, hair straighteners and combs.

The two containers bound for Australia were declared to carry, respectively, plastic sheeting, mattresses and storage racks, and ceramic decorations, trolleys and mattresses. Customs said officers found suspected smuggled goods including about 2.4 million suspected illicit cigarettes, electronics, household goods and beauty products.

The three cases remain under investigation, Customs said.
