Ng Hong-mun, the longtime Pui Kiu Middle School principal and former deputy to the National People’s Congress, died on the morning of October 18, aged 100. Pui Kiu Education Foundation Limited said he died peacefully with family members by his side.
Ng joined Pui Kiu Middle School as a teacher in 1947 and became its principal in 1958. He held the post until 1985, then served as the school’s supervisor until 1996. From 1997 to 2004, he was a director of its school management board.
Alongside his work in education, Ng served in the national legislature from 1975 to 2008, across seven consecutive terms. He first represented Guangdong; from 1997, he represented the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
In 1975, he helped found the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers and became its founding president. He also served on the Preparatory Committee for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Basic Law Committee. In a condolence message, the chief executive cited his service as a Hong Kong affairs adviser. Ng received the Grand Bauhinia Medal in 1998.
Ng spent his later years living in a Pui Kiu Middle School dormitory. His secretary often wheeled him around the campus, HK01 reported.
He was still making public appearances at 99, attending a ceremony in August 2025 marking the 80th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance against Japan. HK01 reported that his last public appearance was a banquet for his 100th birthday in April 2026, where he cut a cake with a former student and friend of more than 50 years.
