The Hong Kong Observatory will assess on Tuesday or Wednesday whether to issue a tropical cyclone warning signal as Tropical Storm Zitan moves slowly over the Beibu Gulf, depending on its movement and local wind conditions.
Zitan is expected to turn east to north-east over the next one to several days and move towards the Leizhou Peninsula and the western Guangdong coast. Reports differ slightly on the timing, with estimates ranging from the next one or two days to later on Monday or Tuesday.
At the time of one report, the storm was about 270 kilometres west-north-west of Haikou and moving slowly. The Observatory said it would closely monitor Zitan’s movement and changes in local winds.
Hong Kong is expected to see more showers from Monday, along with squally thunderstorms and stronger winds in some areas. The unsettled conditions are forecast to continue for the following one or two days, although reports differ on the precise duration of the weather impact.
