The Hong Kong Observatory said it might issue the Standby Signal No. 1 as the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Saudel are forecast to strengthen and approach the coast of eastern Guangdong. The decision will depend on the system’s development and distance from Hong Kong.
The remnants were bringing unsettled weather to the area between the Leizhou Peninsula and Hainan on the morning of August 31. They were expected to move towards southeastern Hainan around the evening of August 31 and gradually intensify into a tropical depression.
The system was forecast to cross the northern South China Sea and gradually approach eastern Guangdong on September 1 and 2. Its effects, together with the northeast monsoon, were expected to produce stronger winds in Hong Kong during the daytime on September 1 and through September 2.
Some parts of Hong Kong were also expected to experience more showers and squally thunderstorms. RTHK reported that the public was urged to check the latest weather information before travelling to school or work.
The Observatory said it would monitor the system’s development and local wind conditions before assessing whether the Standby Signal No. 1 or higher tropical cyclone warning signals were needed. The system’s eventual intensity, track, closest distance to Hong Kong and warning signals had not yet been confirmed.
