Hong Kong’s provisional population reached 7,518,300 in mid-2026, up 19,400 people, or 0.3 per cent, from 7,498,900 a year earlier. The increase came as a net inflow of residents more than offset a natural decline in the population.
Between mid-2025 and mid-2026, the city recorded a net inflow of 39,800 residents. There were 29,700 births and 50,100 deaths during the period, resulting in a natural decrease of 20,400.
The government attributed the population increase to talent-attraction and labour-importation measures, saying they drew people from around the world and offset the natural decrease.
RTHK reported that the estimate comprised 7,252,800 usual residents and 265,500 mobile residents.
The Census and Statistics Department released the figures on 18 August. The government said the estimates are provisional, with final revised figures scheduled for release in February; the year of that release was not specified.
