Hong Kong aims to increase the share of overnight visitors from outside mainland China from 35% to 40% by 2030, under the government’s five-year plan. The target was discussed by the Legislative Council’s Economic Development Panel on 2 October.

Rosanna Law, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, described the goal as challenging but achievable. She said the tourism industry should make greater use of countryside tourism and event tourism, while bringing more overseas tour groups to Hong Kong.

Law also proposed holding recurring major events in seasonal blocks, giving visitors a clearer reason to plan multi-day itineraries. The suggested calendar includes an arts season from February to May and a Chinese arts season from June to September.

A legislator asked whether the strategy would focus on overseas inbound tour groups, individual travellers or events aimed at overseas markets. The proposed season of festive events would run from September to the following February.
