The Hong Kong Tourism Board will hold the city’s first International Mid-Autumn Lantern Spectacular at Victoria Park from September 17 to 27, 2026, it announced on August 27. The exhibition will coincide with the Leisure and Cultural Services Department’s annual Mid-Autumn Lantern Carnival in Causeway Bay.
Themed “reunion”, the Victoria Park exhibition will feature lanterns from around 20 countries and regions. A World Lantern Boulevard will showcase examples including South Korean silk lanterns, Brazilian multi-coloured patchwork lanterns and Polish lanterns made using traditional paper-cutting techniques.
Four giant lanterns will be created by Nanjing Qinhuai lantern-making craftsmen using a traditional technique described as dating back 1,700 years and listed as national intangible cultural heritage. One design, “Tree Shadow Flowing Light”, will stand 8 metres high and draw inspiration from Hong Kong’s banyan trees. “Moonlight over the Lotus Pond” will feature a 7-metre-high moon, while other designs will include fish and lotus motifs.
The event will also include a Hong Kong section featuring handmade lanterns by local artisans. i-CABLE News reported that the display would contain more than 400 lanterns, while RTHK described it as featuring hundreds, including rabbit, star-fruit and goldfish designs.
The lanterns are due to be lit from 6:30 p.m. each night, according to i-CABLE News.
From September 17 to 20, the Tourism Board and Po Leung Kuk plan to run a special mooncake market at Victoria Park’s South Pavilion Plaza. All proceeds are planned to go to Po Leung Kuk.
The Tourism Board is also inviting shopping malls and businesses to offer Mid-Autumn-themed promotions and plans to promote the lantern event alongside the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance. RTHK reported that the fire-dragon activity is scheduled for September 24 to 26, while the exhibition is currently scheduled to run until September 27.
