The Hong Kong Tourism Board originally planned to install lights at designated points along Lugard Road and Harlech Road at the Peak. In a statement on 18 October, it said it would broaden consultation, review the overall arrangements and refine the project details.
A regular hiker told a radio programme he had seen trees wrapped in foam, with lights fastened to their trunks. He said the fixtures could affect tree growth and that the installation would detract from the Peak’s quiet, natural character.
Legislator Chan Hok-fung said a site visit showed that equipment and supports took up some grass space, potentially reducing room for activities such as walking dogs or stretching. He said an arborist should assess whether the lights’ weight or their attachment could affect the trees.
Chan called for consultation to reach beyond individual district representatives, saying people from across Hong Kong use the routes. He also suggested making exposed supports fit the natural surroundings better.
