The murder trial of an insurance broker accused of killing his 65-year-old father opened at the High Court on 20 October 2026. The defendant pleaded not guilty to murdering his father in Hong Kong on 4 December 2018.

In its opening, the prosecution said the defendant asked his father for HK$200,000 to deal with high-interest debt. The two had breakfast together that morning, and the defendant later massaged his father’s back at home before making the request. The prosecution said he cited unemployment and the need to care for his children.

Accounts attributed to the defendant said his father refused, insulted him and tried to hit him; in a recorded interview, he said his father had thrown a chair. The defendant also said he had planned to kill himself to stop moneylenders harassing his wife and wanted to see his father one last time. In a cautioned statement, he said he acted in the moment, stabbed his father a few times and did not mean to kill him.

The prosecution alleged that the defendant took his father’s bank card and a note bearing its PIN, then withdrew HK$203,000 from the account between 4 and 6 December. That included an HK$183,000 transfer to a moneylender. He later carried a suitcase towards Waterfall Bay and returned without it. A red-and-white-blue plastic bag containing his father’s body was found floating in the water.

According to the prosecution, the defendant flew to Kaohsiung on 6 December. After police contacted him, he said he would return to surrender; he arrived in Hong Kong that night and was arrested at the airport.

During a reconstruction of the case, the defendant said he had tried unsuccessfully to cut up his father’s body with a knife after his death, starting at the right shoulder.

The prosecution said a forensic pathologist found five injuries. A wound on the right side of the neck, caused by six or more successive stabs, damaged an artery and the trachea and was identified as the cause of death.
