The Kwai Chung Community Living Room opened on 29 September with shared facilities intended to give residents of subdivided flats more space for everyday tasks and community activities.
The 2,300-square-foot venue has shared cooking, food-preparation and dining areas, laundry facilities, showers, a children’s play area, a multi-purpose activity room and special-learning equipment. Chan Kwok-ki, the chief secretary for administration, said it was expected to serve 250 subdivided-flat households and receive about 40,000 visits a year.
The operating group reorganised the entrance and layout and increased the number of bathrooms from two to four.
Chan described the venue as a platform connecting lower-income residents with wider society, where neighbourhood gatherings could help build mutual support. It will distribute social-welfare information and organise interest groups for people from different backgrounds, older residents and ethnic-minority residents. The facility is Hong Kong’s 17th community living room, the third in the New Territories and the eighth completed in 2026.
