A 66-year-old minibus driver, Lai Nga-man, has been convicted of careless driving and ordered to complete 200 hours of community service after a fatal collision in Kwun Tong. He was also disqualified from driving for six months.

The collision happened about a year before sentencing near a roundabout outside Kwun Tong Community Centre on Tsui Ping Road. An 83-year-old woman was hit and later died in hospital.

The case heard that the woman ran into the road from a refuge island and that Lai was unable to stop in time before striking her. These were the reported case facts and do not amount to an independent finding on responsibility beyond the careless-driving conviction.

The magistrate took into account that Lai had no criminal record, had received a positive assessment in his community service report and had promised not to drive again. The court imposed the 200-hour order and six-month driving ban.
