An eastbound last tram derailed near No. 132 Shau Kei Wan Main Street East at about 1am on 12 October, damaging a restaurant frontage as it entered the pavement area. It had completed service and was returning to the depot.
Hong Kong Tramways said there were no passengers aboard and no one was injured. The company said checks found the overhead wires unaffected and tram services ran normally from the first tram of the day.
Hong Kong Tramways suspended the driver from driving duties and said it would cooperate with the investigation into the cause. It had contacted the restaurant and said it would deal with follow-up and compensation after the investigation and assessment were complete.
The restaurant owner told HK01 he had not yet reviewed footage from the restaurant’s CCTV system and that the repair costs had not been priced. He expected to pay for repairs before seeking compensation.
