A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson after items on his hospital bed caught fire at Kwong Wah Hospital on Waterloo Road, Yau Ma Tei, shortly after midnight on August 23, 2026. The fire occurred in an observation room, and staff moved the man away from the bed before extinguishing the flames.

The man, surnamed Wong, had reportedly been admitted after becoming drunk and was placed in the observation room after causing a disturbance. Reports said medical restraints had been used on him while he was being observed.

A smoke detector or sensor alerted hospital staff, who found the mattress and medical restraint belt on fire. They removed Wong from the bed and put out the fire, while police and firefighters were called to the hospital.

Police found a lighter on the bed and arrested Wong on suspicion of arson. The allegation remains under investigation, and firefighters initially believed the cause of the fire was suspicious.

Wong was being detained for questioning as of the reports. The case was being handled by the Eighth Team of the Yau Tsim District Crime Squad.
