Police arrested a 48-year-old local man after raiding a suspected drug-storage unit in a public-housing flat in Sau Mau Ping on August 14, according to police. He was arrested on suspicion of trafficking in dangerous drugs and detained for investigation.
Officers reportedly seized more than 60 packets of suspected cocaine weighing about 3.6 kilograms in total. Police estimated the drugs’ street value at approximately HK$2.9 million.
Electronic scales and a large quantity of resealable plastic bags were also reportedly found in the unit, police said.
The operation was carried out by officers from the Central District anti-triad action unit. Police said they believed a drug-trafficking syndicate had been using public-housing flats as storage and distribution centres to make investigation and tracing more difficult.
Police said the seized drugs were mainly intended for entertainment venues on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon. The force said the operation prevented the suspected drugs from entering the market.
The man remained detained for investigation after the arrest. Police did not provide, in the reported details, the name of the housing estate or flat, whether further arrests had been made, or whether a formal charge had been filed.
