About 20 people went downstairs during a late-night fire at a unit in Mong Kok, including parents with children and people carrying babies. A male staff member was slightly injured while trying to put out the flames, was treated by ambulance personnel and did not go to hospital.
Police received a report of smoke and fire at a unit on 38-44A Bute Street at 1.53am on September 30. Firefighters attended with a hose and a breathing-apparatus team and extinguished the fire shortly afterwards.
Firefighters continued spraying water to cool the area. Their preliminary assessment was that a cigarette or cigarette butt had set fire to bedding and miscellaneous items, and they found no suspicious circumstances.
A couple on the fourth floor called for help during the fire. Firefighters later checked on them and found that they were not in danger.
