More than 34,000 subdivided units across Hong Kong had completed registration under the Basic Housing Units scheme by mid-August, according to Housing Bureau figures. The scheme’s first-stage early-bird registration period ended on August 31.
The mid-August figure is an interim count rather than the final total. Legislative Council housing affairs panel vice-chairman Leung Man-kwong described the number as moderate and said more owners could register as the registration deadline and the enforcement period approached.
Leung said his understanding from some subdivided-unit owners was that most units might meet the requirements after relatively minor works, such as replacing entrance doors and improving ventilation. He did not provide a breakdown of how many units would fall into this category.
Other units might need all fittings removed and their layouts rebuilt, Leung said, leaving owners to consider the investment required to continue operating them.
Leung suggested that the Housing Bureau provide owners who want to continue operating with guidance on quotations, material choices, cost-effective works and compliance with legal requirements.
The final number of registered units has not been given. The reports also do not specify when enforcement will begin or how the Housing Bureau will provide the proposed guidance.
