New Huanggang Port opened on October 12 without a ride-hailing pick-up or drop-off area on its Hong Kong side. Fleet taxis can use a reserved facility there.
The following day, Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan said the arrangement followed the practice at other ports. Private cars generally cannot collect passengers there unless they have a regular quota or hire-car permit, she said, adding that facilities also depend on the space available in the public transport interchange.
At about 8am on opening morning, the queue for urban taxis temporarily lengthened. One passenger told HK01 he waited about five minutes before staff directed him to the taxi stand and explained that ride-hailing cars could not reach the port.
Legislator Yiu Ming proposed reviewing whether to add a Hong Kong-side pick-up area once legal ride-hailing services formally operate.
On the Shenzhen side, ride-hailing passengers use a separate pick-up area on B3. In a reporter’s test, the app did not readily locate it; a staff member advised searching for the port name, which brought up the B3 area.
