The Northeast New Territories Landfill Extension fully opened on 4 October, taking over from the existing landfill as one of Hong Kong’s main facilities for final waste disposal. The Environmental Protection Department announced the handover as the older site moves towards closure and restoration.

Located southeast of the Northeast New Territories Landfill, the extension has a designed capacity of about 19 million cubic metres.

The transition followed the completion of key works in mid-2026, including land formation, installation of an impermeable liner and construction of a surface-water collection system. Systems for treating leachate and managing landfill gas were also completed. Limited operational testing of waste reception began as waste operations were gradually transferred to the extension.

The existing Northeast New Territories Landfill is expected to stop operating later in 2026 and undergo restoration. The department said it would continue improving the extension’s operations and management, as well as its environmental and safety performance, while advancing the remaining restoration and greening work at the older site.
