The inaugural Northern Metropolis Marathon, organised by Heung Yee Kuk, is scheduled for November 1, 2026, with about 15,000 people registered. The programme includes a full marathon, half marathon, 10-kilometre race and 1,600-metre event.
The full marathon starts at Heung Yee Kuk Building in Shek Mun and finishes on Fanling Bypass, passing the Science Park waterfront, Tolo Highway and a tunnel on the way. Only part of the inaugural route falls within the Northern Metropolis. Heung Yee Kuk’s chair said infrastructure works in the area could mean future routes change.
Staged road closures and traffic diversions in affected areas are due to begin at 2am. From 3am, the southbound section of Fanling Bypass and a northbound tunnel section are scheduled to close in stages.
The Transport Department says East Rail services between Hung Hom and Sheung Shui, and Tuen Ma Line services between Tai Wai and Wu Kai Sha, will start in stages from 4.20am. Overnight buses can connect passengers to stations serving the event. Early train services may be changed or cancelled if unforeseen circumstances arise.
The first road reopening is expected at 11am, when northbound traffic through the tunnel is due to resume, along with all entrances from Fanling Highway to the tunnel’s northbound direction and a northbound-to-southbound right-turn lane. Other affected roads in Fanling are scheduled to reopen progressively after the race, which is expected to finish at about 3pm.
